Protecting the Wild Pacific Trail
The natural beauty of Vancouver Island’s rugged West Coast is breathtaking. OCEANWEST is keeping it that way. Here are a few examples of OCEANWEST’s environmental stewardship throughout the development process.
- Protect and enhance the Wild Pacific Trail – OCEANWEST is working with local residents who originated the trail to enhance and extend it within OCEANWEST.
- Preserve riparian areas – Environmental consultants have identified rare plants, sea grasses, inter tidal zones and more that will not be touched. OCEANWEST is keeping protected riparian areas beside most streams even wider than the bylaws require.
- Respect First Nations culture – OCEANWEST is preserving trees of cultural significance to the local First Nations people that have been identified onsite.
- Maintain wildlife corridors – The location of OCEANWEST’s forested eight hectare (20-acre) Central Park, directly between Olsen Bay and the Pacific Ocean, was chosen because it is a location bears, deer and other wildlife have historically frequented.
- Test alternate garbage collection – OCEANWEST has installed bear-proof garbage containers on the first two cul-de-sacs as a test. If residents and wildlife are receptive to the method, OCEANWEST will apply it to the rest of the cul-de-sacs in the development. Normal household garbage containers and collection methods have been identified as a main attractant for bears.
- Conserve green space – More than 20 percent of OCEANWEST has been designated as park land.
